Adding Sub Domains
« on: November 26, 2004, 12:57:08 PM »

If I am a sub domain already, could I allow another person access to my account by adding another subdomain? My account says I can have 2 subdomains. And, how would I set this up?

a little flinchy... spiral

Hi Spiral,
Yes, basically you would be setting up a sub of a sub domain. In your cPanel under "Site Management" click on "Subdomains". Enter the username of the sub or whatever you want to call it, and then hit the "Add" button. Don't worry about the "Add Redirection" and "Remove Redirection" buttons. If you have any problems let me know.

Thanks Bert..

Could or would a new subdomain require or get a different password? Lets say I let someone else use my zbox account to add things to this new subdomain. Would they have to have my password or could I set them up for their own password? Curious in Michigan...

Hi Spiral,
When you create a subdomain what it will do is create a new directory in your root directory with the same name as the sub domain you created. So for instance if you created a subdomain named "test" you would get a new directory in your root named test, and if you put a web page there with the name index.html, whenever someone typed in http://test.spiral.zboxhosting.com they would see the index.html page in your subdomain's directory. In answer to your second question the answer is no. A subdomain is basically a redirected url off your domain. There is no cPanel created, no Ziteman etc. It is not meant for sharing your account. There is no way to share an account with separate passwords etc.

Sure thing Spi,

Subdomains are a subdomain of your account. If your account is a subdomain of zboxhosting.com or .net they it would be a sub subdomain. ~;-) By that I mean if the account was username.zboxhosting.com and I created a subdomain of that it would be like subuser.username.zboxhosting.com. All Cpanel will do is create a folder in your account with the subdomain name. It does not have it's own username and password, just it's own cgi bin. You could however give someone ftp access to it if you created a new ftp user with that subdomain as the user and a seperate password. It's really kind of confusing for someone with a subdomain account as the url just get's that much longer. It's really made for folks that have their own domain. Such as if someone had the domain bob.com they could create a sub like billy.bob.com ~;-)

A parked domain is just a domain that points to another domain. For instance if you had the domain bob.com, you could use parked domains to have bob.net, bob.org. and bob.biz all go to the same bob.com website.

Add on domains are where you can "point" another domain to a specified directory in your account. For instance in your username.zboxhosting.com account you have a directory named "bobdoc" you could use add on domains to point bob.com to username.zboxhosting.com/bobdoc/index.html

Hope that helps.

~;-)
