Well actually that's not true. All of the accounts that are on Comet will be moved to a brand new server in our providers Los Angeles data center. We have been on Comet for two and a half years now and good ole Comet is getting a little tired. So everyone on Comet will be moved to a AMD dual Opteron server with 2 gigs of ram, three 160 gig sata hard drives in a hardware raid 1 configuration, and redundant multiple power supplies! Ok I know all that geek stuff don't mean much to alot of folks, but in english that all means that the new server will scream. I've ran pings from a server in Houston TX to the new server in LA and it is a good deal faster than Comet is. The new servers name is "MIg" after the Russian built fighter planes. But wait there's more! ~;-) (sorry just had to say that!) in the LA data center we will have two new bandwidth providers. They are Mzima and Savvis. Both are tier 1 providers and my providers network is so high tech that it will look at how many hops your route takes to reach the server. It will analyze your path and if it sees that it takes you 10 hops through Mzima, but 15 hops through Savvis, it willl automatically route you through Mzima. How cool is that!
Ok now about the new data center. It is the One Wilshire Place data center in LA. Now the one thing about a data center in LA that might make folks nervous is earthquakes. The data center is build to withstand a 8.0 earthquake. I used to live in LA. I was there in the San Fernando Valley when the Northridge quake hit back in 94. That quake was a 6.7 and I'll never ever forget it. It was like God picked up my apartment building and dribbled it like a basketball. There were several building collapses in my North Hollywood neighborhood. An 8.0 is beyond catastrophic. And the data center would survive it. Last September when LA had that major power outtage, the One WIlshire data center didn't drop offline for a second! It's backup power generators kicked in and kept things humming throughout the outtage. If you want to learn more about the One Wilshire data center then go here:

Now about the move itself. It will be painless. NO downtime involved whatsoever. Members that have dynamic databased sites such as forums, blogs, and photogalleries won't even notice it. The move will commence at 10:00 AM Pacific time next Saturday the 4th of March. Our members that have their own domains will need to change their nameservers with their domain registrar. But seeing that for most of you I am your registrar you will need to do nothing as I'll change your nameservers for you. For the few of you who are using other domain registrars I will be in contact with you before the move to give you instructions on what you need to do. But, no matter which domain registrar you use, there will be NO propagation time for your domains move. Our provider has been doing this for quite some time and they have this down to an artform.
That's all for now. I will also be sending this in an email to all members on Comet. Frankly, I will be a bit sad to see Comet put out to pasture. She's served us well. But Mig will pick up where Comet left off and give us a faster server with even better connectivity! And I think Comet would like that.
~;-)

Regarding the NAS offsite backup server. It runs an array of hard drives that total a whopping 4 terabytes of storage. To give you someting to base that on, a terabyte is roughly 1,000 gigs! Woof!

The actual move time will take between 4 to six hours. All the userfiles on Comet will need to be transfered to Mig and the individual accounts set up on the new server. So why won't there be any downtime? Because everything you do on Comet will get mirrored to the Mig server! Even after your files transfer is completed and the account set up on MIg. In essence everything you do will be on both servers after the transfer. And that will go on for a couple of days until we are assured that everything on Mig is working fine. Like I've said, our provider is one of the best in the business and they know how to do this.
