"You say you want a revolution... well, ya know.."

Hi Bert. I need your expert help here. I need the dummy version of how to set up the remote mail system for poster registration to a phpBB. Can you help a guy? Puh-leez?
I see the boxes in the admin centre, but I need to know exactly what SMTP info I need to put in each of them, or, what if any info has to be put where in other parts of the config section to make it work with the mail addy I want to use.
Thanx Bert,

Thanx Bert, Hi Sandy, No problem.
Go to your admin panel. Under the "General Admin" section, click on "Configuration" then look for "Enable account activation" then click the "Admin" check box. That makes it so you must approve each member manually. Also right below that function is "Enable Visual Confirmation Requires users enter a code defined by an image when registering." I recommend clicking the "yes" checkbox. That will make each registrant enter a visual code during the sign up process. That can help defeat spambots.
To enter the email address where you want to be notified of new user signups, in the same "Configuration" section scroll down to the bottom where it says "Email Settings". For "Admin Email Address" enter the full email address that you want to be notified at.
Now right below that is:
"Use SMTP Server for email Say yes if you want or have to send email via a named server instead of the local mail function"
Now either way works fine. The Phpbb local mail function works great. Or you can use the servers SMTP. To set up SMTP, click the "Yes" checkbox. Then for "SMTP Server Address" just type in mail.yourdomain.com" where "yourdomain.com" is your domain. Then for "SMTP Username" type in your Cpanel username. Then for "SMTP Password" type in your Cpanel password. Then click on the "Submit" button. That's it. You're done.
One thing to be aware of though. Phpbb and frankly all php based scripts must be kept up to date. Otherwise your forum will be open to exploits. The problem with Phpbb is that it's not easy to update. You have to download a tar.gz file to your computer, extract all the files, then find the proper set of files you need for your update, then FTP them to the server. It can be a pain, especially when a bunch of exploit updates happen in a short period of time. Which is why so many Phpbb forums get exploited. It's such a pain to update, that the Admin doesn't keep it updated and boom, something bad happens.
My recommendation is to use the Simple Machines Forum (SMF) forum instead. Frankly it is not any less prone to exploits than Phpbb is. BUT, the update process is extremely simple. You just do a couple of button clicks in your admin section and SMF does the rest. It's the best update process I've seen in any php script. This forum is SMF and from my admin point of view it's a keeper. But, SMF doesn't have quite as many add on features as Phpbb does. Nor does it have as many cool looking skins. But for my peace of mind SMF wins hands down.
~;-)
