question about dot coms
« on: August 16, 2006, 02:10:56 PM »

Hey bert, rmartin here

I'm thinking about starting a small busines out of my home. I've searched domain names and the name I want to use is available. I understand there are dozens of companies I can register with, and some offer hosting. I would like to use zbox because i'm familar with your service. One of my main concerns is to have a short and easy web name. So, if I use zbox, will my website still have zboxhosting in the title? For instance, my writing site I have with you is wordy. I wanted my site to be called FrayedEdges, but I ended up with this, http://rmartin.zboxhosting.net/FrayedEdges/frayedHome.html. Is there any way I can simplfy that?

Thanks, any info on who to use or how to go about getting a dotcom domain would be helpful!

Martin, once you register a domain that name is all that makes up your url. Your domain would be blahblah.com, .org, .net, or .whatever. That's the cool part of taking that step. Enjoy. smile

Hi rmartain,

As Sandy pointed out, your domain would be whatever.com, with no zbox extention. what you have now is a "sub domain".
My domain is misrox.com and I'm at ZboX.   rolleyes

If you would like a Domain, email Bert, zbox@zboxhosting.com and he can set it up for you, if you like.

The domain would be yours alone. So if you should ever want or have to move (cough, sputter) you can take it with you, with no problem.

And there are a number of ways we can set up a domain for you. We can "point" your new domain to any index page in your current account. So, for instance, if you purchased the domain "domain.com" and you wanted the domain to point to the index.html file in a directory called "directory", whenever someone typed in http://domain.com they would automatically go to the page "directory/index.html" in your account. Or, another thing we can do is to create a totally new account using "domain.com", then move all of your files in your current account over to the new "domain.com" account. Then when anyone typed in "http://domain.com" they would automatically be taken to the index.html page in the domain.com accounts root directory. Or you could use a redirect to take them to any page you wish in your domain.com account. An example of that is this forum. When you type in http://zboxhosting.com, you are automatically taken to http://zboxhosting.com/board/index.php

All of the options can be a little confusing at first. But that is one of the beauties of our service in that you have enough options to give you a headache.

You can purchase your domains through us. We charge $7.94 per year for .com, .net, and .org domains. Other domain extensions are available at a slightly higher price. And of course when you purchase your domain through us it remains yours. Even if you should ever want to move. (cough, sputter)

If you have any questions just shoot me an email and we'll discuss all of your options in detail.

~;-)
