help in understanding directorys
« on: November 26, 2006, 08:00:28 AM »

Hey Bert and anyone who sees this, please feel free to chime in.

I don't understand how to organize "directories" and "root" and sub-"domains" and the like. Is there a tutorial page that explains how to set them up?

When I made my fanfiction site, I just set it up without caring so much about how search engines and site names and such, but with my domain dotcom, I want to make sure I do it right.

Am I supposed to use the 'index' as my home page? I created a home page the address lists in properties as home.html When I saved that page to my favorites, it comes up as .com, but when I do a Google search, I am directed to the index page as my .com.

I'm not sure if I know enough to even explain what I need to know. LOL

Basically, what I want to do is have a home page with a link to a gallery page which will have a list of thumbnails which will link to the individual page of each thumbnail. I'm just not sure how to set the root and directories and files and what not.

Thanks for any help

The "index" file is the default "home page" for any directory. If you don't make an index.html file for a directory, anyone who types in the basic address of that directory will see a list of every file in it, so making an index.html file lets you control what people see when they enter the base url. It's a wise move.

If I were to enter the basic url address for my site, I would be taken to the index.html file in my root directory.

IOW, the net will translate this entry, "http://sandycor.net" into "http://sandycor.net/index.html"

Thanks Sandy, I actually understood that, but that just means I have more questions.

Make an index.html; check

Is that index.html what I use for my home page, and does that mean I leave the default index blank?

Also, when should I make a new directory and when should I add files to the root directory?

HI "R"
The index.html, which is in your "Root" is where you would build your Homepage. You would put all your codes to your home page there. Just click on the "edit" to the right of the index.html and start building.
You can add as many directories as you want to your Root. I would not ever add "files" to my Root, just directories. Then in each directory you can add your subdirectories, and files.
Here are a few tutorials, which may help explain, a few things about Ziteman. I believe the first tute explains some things on diectories.

Post any other questions, you may have. Someone will help point you in the right direction. wink  Rox

Thanks Rox, very helpful

I put my home code into the index of my 'root' and moved my pics out of my root and into a separate gallery. I'm sure I'll have more questions, but for now, I think I'm on the right path.

Thanks for the Help!
