my bird is in grave condition :-(
« on: January 31, 2007, 09:38:25 AM »

Rosie, my 9 yr old cockatiel is in very bad shape. I may not have her much longer :-(

she is very sick and may not make it. right now she is at an exotics specialist vet in VA trying to save her. she has a problem with eggs getting stuck, not coming out, and probably ruptured inside her. she's too sick to do surgery, and they are trying to stablize her now; placing a tube down her throat to feed and give antibiotics and pain medication. within a day or 2 if she doesn't get strong enough for surgery, i will have to do the humane thing and euthanize her.

the worst thing is she's 50 miles away and i can't be with her. the Dr and I talked about me coming to see her, but decided it would be worse for her when i left her again. it's so hard for me to leave her like that, i've always done all the nursing care for my pets, but i just don't have the knowledge for this situation. i don't want her to suffer, but if there's a chance she can survive, i've got to take it.
<crying break>
i hate the fact that she could die without me being there, that she may feel i've abandoned her. she's so bonded to me. although she may be sick enough she doesn't care right now (i hope, kinda). wish her luck, k.  d

Re: update on rosie, not good
« Reply #9 on: February 08, 2007, 07:26:17 PM »

well, rosie had been doing better, but tuesday she started filling up with fluid again. I took her back to the vet for a recheck, and they did an ultrasound on her, and what we thought had been eggs earlier turned out to be cysts, at least 5 of them. plus something wierd in there, probably tumor. at this point there's really nothing else to do; even surgery is pretty much out, she's a very high risk for it. so looks like i'll keep her comfortable as long as i can (a few days, weeks... whatever) and then have to euthanize her when life is no longer good for her. still not sure where the cysts originate, most likely ovaries, possibly liver.

DAMN IT....

I had to euthanize my Rosie today, she was miserable, didn't even want to come to me anymore :-(

Dusty is here alone screaming now, poor boy. We'll have to pay a lot of attention to him; he was bonded to her and it will take time for him to adjust, as well as me. now i am sitting here stuffing my face with a bag of chips and typing one handed....

a very sad donna

Sorry to hear about Rosie.  That just sux.  I hope Dusty adjusts soon - you too.
She lived a long life - and a good one with you as Mom - you were both blessed.
