not furry, but....
« on: October 03, 2006, 12:45:18 PM »

how about turtles? I just got 3 hatchling box turtles today from my son, who had the turtle lay eggs in his front yard 3 months ago. they are so small and cute! I'm going to raise them, then maybe give 2 of them to a nature center, where the last one I rehabed went.

I'm guessing they're 3-5 days old; they still have their egg tooth, and the yolk sack has dried up but still soft spot there (belly button, lol). I set up a 20 gal tank with sand on the bottom, then wood bark, and some spagnum moss. made a pool from a paint pan, which gives a nice slant for them to climb in and out of. added a stick and a big piece of bark; tried to make it a nice woodsy environment for them. they didn't eat today, so i'll try again tomorrow. they may not need to just yet. wish me luck, as most research has said hatchlings can be tricky.

donna, how cute!! You have really fixed them up with a nice habitat!

My sis, found a lil turtle and gave it to my son when he was around 10 yrs old. The turtle was about the size of a dime! She thought it was just a pebble when she first saw it, then it moved. LOL
I put it in a 10 gallon tank and fixed it up somewhat like you have. Later realized it was a water turtle, and put water in the bottom of the tank, with a big rock in the middle for him to climb up on. He grew to about the size of a coffee can lid. Then my son and his dad took him out and turned him loose in the lake.
It was sure a lot of fun to feed him..took the tube worms right outta our hands.

Good luck with your lil ninjas... smile  Rox

here's a couple more pics; 1 shows the egg tooth; the other is their set up for eating, as I read to separate them as they might accidently hurt each other when grabbing for food. i put the trays on a heating pad, gave them food and water in it, and placed a full spectrum light on them for at least an hour. haven't seen them eat yet tho...

I changed my avatar in honor of your new additions.   laugh

Ohhh, that close up pic is so, sweet!! donna, what are you feeding them? Have you tried Tube Worms? I remember my son's turtle really liking those. We just put one in the water, and he would pig out LOL Then later he began taking them out of our fingers.

I like turtles and collect figures of them. smile Rox

Earthworms, huh? Well try some Tube worms. You can get them in any pet store. ( as you probably already know)  laugh even Wally World has them, by their aquariums. Recommended for turtles. Gawd, you know more than me LOL! You Vet Tech you! ROFL

ok, i went and bought some meal worms, i'll see if they like them. i was told also they probably just aren't ready to eat yet.

also, there are now 4 turtles; someone at the clinic found one upsidedown on his steps today, almost stepped on it, and  i brought it home. figured what's one more, lol.

huh  yep, i've named the 1st three Moe, Larry, & Curly <G>   rolleyes

I still need a name for the newbie...    unsure  this one is a bit older than the other 3, the eggtooth                is about gone, and is much more active.

and, someone ate, 3 1/2 meal worms out of 4 were missing, lol
