What 'ya got there??
|
At about 5:45 this morning I opened the front door to let Dude in, then went out on the front porch to see what the weather was like. Out of the corner of my eye I saw something BIG moving! I froze, and slowly turned to see a young buck eating the apples from our tree that had fallen to the ground. It's dark here that time of the morning, and he was just at the edge of the light from our porch. I started to inch backwards into the house to tell Rox when he looked up at me and gave me a look like "I see ya there! Do what you are gonna do, I'm eating apples!" So I back pedaled into the house to get the flashlight and tell Rox. We both came back out on the porch and he could care less. We lit up the flashlight and discovered that there was not one but two young bucks feasting away! I'd say they were both yearlings. The tops of their heads were about equal with my shoulder, and I'm 5'8". No felt on their antlers which really were just long spikes. But then the other one turned to look at us and we could see that he had only one antler! A Unicorn! Probably broke it off play fighting. We watched them for a bit and they slowly came together and started nuzzling and grooming each other. Brothers, I think! We've seen bite marks in the apples and we've long suspected deer were eating them and now we have proof! They are beautiful animals and it was magical to watch them! I heard a buck and a cougar square off last year out back of our house and by the sound of it the cougar came out the loser, so maybe these two are cougar patrol cadets! LOL!
Sometimes the beautiful wilderness here can overwhelm you. Deer in our front yard, cougars running around doing what they do, last week we had a "herd" of five racoons romping in our back yard eating pears from our tree, and then there was the Bald Eagle that Rox saw in the tree in our back yard. And today, I was driving home from work, and it was such a gorgeous afternoon, and the 25 miles of my commute is just beautiful with the mix of evergreens and other trees all turning their fall colors. Just beautiful!
We truly do love it here!
~;-)

Yes! Mystical was the morning! What a wonderful site to behold. I loved it when the young bucks were nuzzling each other and giving each other a lick or two LOL. It was precious!
The racoons in the backyard were exciting to watch, too. At first we seen two, then three, then the fourth! From the darkness scurried a small one to make it five! I have a compost where I have been putting some peelings and other vegetable leftovers. I do think they are coming to feast on those. Truly it is so much fun to watch these awesome creatures!
And, yes, we do love it here!
