New forum options for PDhomes
« on: February 04, 2008, 07:31:18 PM »

This poll is to get the opinions of current PDhomes users with regards to what forum format they prefer. Most Webtv users simply hate forums, however some type of forum is needed, as that will allow all users no matter what platform they are on to speak up. And that is important to us. Sorry, but you must be a registered user of this forum in order to vote for your choice. Our apologies for that but it's needed, as that will keep the spammers out.

I would want anything but the current one that is used by PDHomes and Amishhosting.

I've seen another Webtv user say they can't use it with their Webtv.

In my experience it is difficult to log in and stay logged in. I have to leave and come back after logging in before it will say I'm logged in and after posting it says I'm logged out until I leave and come back.

I always hated using it.

I have to agree. That's another reason I pretty much stayed away and how come I didn't find out about the changeover from there instead of a Usenet group. Then I went to Jack's ng to read the thread(s).

I'm on computer right now but I also gave this forum a look-see from WebTV.

The Observer forum had two speeds, slow and tediously slower, using a PC too - even with a bb cable connection. I can't imagine what it would have been like if I was still using my LBB. That's why it was almost never used.

I did a lot of hair pulling with the forum, especially since early on I was accessing everything from my LBB. I did fall in love with the FM. I had one of the no longer available free accounts and liked the experience so much that for the first (and only) time in my internet life, I paid money for space.  biggrin

I am ex pdhomes now amishhosting. I think that it would be best to keep pdhomes users here because few of the webtv users left are into trying anything new. With a type of forum like this that most webtv users have not used before, you will have few enogh people as it is.

Aslo, pdhomes users couldn't do server side scripting but when they get moved here the will be able to. If they had their own forum, they might not get exposed to to it like thay could here.

Just don't put any damn google ads here! That's what killed Patrick's and Doug's forum for webtv users.

Thanks for the input Mike. No worries. No ads on any of our forums. Ever!

LOL!

Why do people keep saying that WebTVers don't like forums like this?  I've been posting (and lurking) in forums like this for many years and never knew I wasn't supposed to like them. Someone should have told me!

I really hated the "ObserverCo" forum because it formatted so badly on the Webbie that I could barely navigate it (the text was HUGE and I couldn't tell where one post left off and the next began), but that's the only forum I've ever seen that was like that. This one is just fine.

Because it's mostly true.

As a former LBB user, I can testify that far too many will not under any circumstances use forums like this. A few will put on their bravest face and come to have a peek, take a quick look around, say they don't like the "format" or "can't figure out how it works" and immediately race back to the warmth of Mother MSN. There are always exceptions - like you and me for example - who aren't bothered and will go anywhere, but those of us willing to use non-MSN areas were(and probably still are) a tiny minority of that community.

I don't know how many WebTVers remain - whether or not their numbers are even more reduced than they were becoming when I was there I mean - but a very few years ago you couldn't talk most of them into posting anywhere but the MSN newsgroups, and the greater number would fight tooth and nail against taking the conversation anywhere else. So long time web friends lost touch because those on WebTV would rather part company than go someplace their friends who moved to PCs could post too. That's probably why a lot of people shouldered the extra cost and kept their webbies even after they got a computer.

I believe it's probably because most WebTV folks aren't really that much into all the things one can do with the net - most are just into the camaraderie and the famous feeling of 'community' they feel is only available to those with WebTV. Not to mention most are fearful of straying outside the warm confines of the MSN newsgroups - even though there are usually more trolls there than in forums like this. Maybe a lot of them think all outside venues are like Usenet. Black/white, nothing in between.

If that situation has changed I'm ready to stand corrected, but I'll bet it hasn't, and life inside the cocoon remains the same as ever for the great majority of webbie users.

Well this forum is a case in point. With the addition of all of the new folks to ZboX from DAP, we've garnered what, around 30 new users to this forum? That is a very small number compared to the size of the new user base.

Frankly, my thinking at this point is that we'll keep the DAP forums here too. That way everything will be in one place. But that's not set in stone as of yet, as I want more opinions.

It doesn't matter what device they use to access the Internet, a lot of people don't post anywhere.

I've stalked er um trailed a group of people all over. We were WebTV users when we started posting in the Missouri state ng. One other person and myself still have WebTV but we mostly use our computers now to stay in touch now (though we also use the phone and snail mail). We have our own (not especially WebTV friendly) board.

My contact email for PDhomes is a WebTV one. I was thinking of changing it but my main alternate email is Hotmail and I ran across an old thread elsewhere on this board about Hotmail difficulties and with everything in somewhat of a state of flux I didn't want to take chances.

Hi Nelly,
Well the Hotmail problem we had (and lot's of other webhosting companies) were resolved. Although Hotmail still seems to like putting email for our servers in the spam directory.

Well yeah, and the vast majority of internet users don't buy web space either, but... with respect, isn't it a given that within the framework of this particular discussion we were and are talking about the habits of those who do post somewhere or other on some kind of regular basis?  smile

---------------------------------------

Oh, and the answer to anyone's email problems should be Fastmail.fm - it comes in free and several levels of pay varieties and works without any of the glitches that seem to be regularly associated with Hotmail and others of that ilk. I've used it since my webbie days with nary a complaint from my end. Just sayin...

I've never really had a problem posting in forums, as long as they were fairly easy to navigate. WebTV friendliness has little or nothing to do with it. Even on computer, if I'm not crazy about a certain format I'm not likely to hang around for long. A friend from WebTV days is always setting up new boards, with varying degrees of success.

I think the best boards are ones like this one. Web-Nuts has a good board, too.

Well, I do have a free Fastmail.fm account and you can pop Hotmail to it. I might go to using it. Especially if I pay, I can access it from Outlook Express as well.

Hi Nelly,
Well the kicker is, with regards to Webtv users, is whether they will work with Webtv or not. Vbulletin doesn't, IPB doesn't (or at least it didn't used to, haven't tried it in quite some time now though), the current version of Phpbb (the version Web-Nuts uses) does, but there is a new build in beta. This version of SMF does work, but then there is the new build of SMF which has gone final, and then they have an even newer build in beta. Of course, the logical thing would be to never change this version of SMF. But there is a problem there too. As versions become no longer supported, then they get vulnerable to exploits. That is the main problem with using forums that are based on Php and Mysql. Once an exploit becomes known, the script kiddies loose the hounds looking for old versions of scripts to "play" with. And then bad things happen.
