Custom 404 Error Page
« on: February 25, 2008, 08:28:39 PM »

My error log was chalk full of error codes and it was hurting my eyes. I first investigated the IP address by going to an IP Host Finder tool and discovered it was googlebot. I had recently changed the name of one of my PHP Directories and the '404 errors' started racking up and Mr. Bert tells me that's because I didn't have a custom 404 error page set up.

You can go into Cpanel, click the 'Error Pages' icon, and there you'll see a list of error page numbers i.e. 400, 401, 403, 404. Click on 404 and in the next window there's 6 tabs and an empty text box. Click any combo of tabs you'd like (you don't necessarily need them all), and their .htaccess codes appear in the text box. I used all the tabs except the lower right one. Click save and voila.. you now have a custom 404.shtml page in your ROOT directory to do battle with the search bots, spiders, crawlers, whatever you want to call them. I will say though that the error page is very plain and almost butt ugly LOL. So..

I searched out a fairly easy to read 'how to create a custom 404 error' page to see if i could get more creative. This phonifier link works good with a webtv browser but I get kicked offline trying to view the regular URL in my webtv browser.. be advised ;)

http://www.phonifier.com/phonify.php?i=1&m=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.webkeydesign.com%2F13%2F404-custom-error-page%2F

It's a good site if you want to venture into 'Customizing' your custom 404 error page. Yes, I took the chance, pulled some hair, cussed a few times, and this is my new 404.shtml page:

http://spiralnexus.net/404.shtml

Like the website says, 1ST I created a 404.html (minus the 's') and put my images and stuff in it like I was building a regular page. When I was done I saved it THEN RENAMED it to 404.shtml by adding the 's' into it.

Then I went into Cpanel, clicked on the 'error pages' icon, clicked on 404, an lo and behold there was my 404.shtml page that I built in the ROOT directory. Now I clicked the 5 tabs on top of that box that I wanted and the corresponding .htaccess codes appeared at the bottom on my already completed (former) html stuff. IF you want to source out my 404 page and reuse the codes that's fine but please use your own images OR upload mine into your own file manager ok?? Here's my 404.shtml again:

You my want to go to the printer friendly mode of this post to print this. Hope this helps.

p.s. Want to see IF you are getting errors on anything in your Siteman File Mgr? Visit Cpanel and click on the 'Error Log' icon and you shall see.
