Rebooting Server
« on: March 04, 2008, 05:40:05 AM »

I am in the process of rebooting the server. It appears there's no way around having to do this until I can get ya'll on a much better server. It should come back up in around 10 minutes.

The main problem is that d21c is getting hammered for requests for a file that doesn't exist. That in itself is usually not an issue. But when the requests for the file number in the millions per day, that can cause an issue. It appears now that it's not an intentional attack but there are so many requests it just keeps bringing the server to it's knees. Rebooting is no help as shortly after the server comes back online the requests start all over again. Frankly I think the next step is just to shut down the offending account. After all the needs of the many out weigh the needs of the one.

More info asap.

Hello Bert and thanks for the news/reply/help. Not sure what you mean by "offending account" (but I may know what you mean.) If you do that would I be able to have confidence that my images would probably be OK to view if I launch the auctions tomorrow? Thanks again.  topy   tommy

Hi Tommy,
By "offending account" I mean just that. Apparently ALL of the issues we've been having these last few days are all related to one file owned by a user at d21c. On the plus side, the user has deleted the file. But their in lies the rub. A deleted file that gets requests to view the file will get redirected over to 404 error page. The 404 error means "file not found". Normally that's a good thing and the user did good by deleting it. However this is an extreme instance. The server is getting literally millions of requests for that file, and the way Cpanel is set up, it will redirect the requests to a standard 404 error page. The problem is that because we are getting so many requests for that file, it's the redirect that is bringing the server down. A redirect does take a bit (although miniscule) amount of server resources. But when you compound that millions of times the server has to work MUCH harder which causes the server load to go through the roof and then you have services that keep dropping out.

I know, that's a whole lot of geek speak. But the fix, is simple. I created an empty file, with the filename and extension the offending file had. Now folks will simply go nowhere as there is no content to the file, therefore requiring NO server resources and the server is not working to redirect those requests over to the 404 error page. Hopefully that will take care of the problem. If it doesn't, I'll just have to pull the plug on the entire account. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

I have implemented another reboot of the Domania server. Just so we can clear all of those file requests that in the queue. Server should be back on line within the next 10 minutes.

Well as ya'll have noticed the reboot didn't really solve the problem. There are several other files in that account that are being hit on as there is an open directory where they are located (and ya'll know how bad an open directory is right?? <G>)

So, I have suspended the account. And come to find out upon emailing the member about the suspension his email account on record is full (ya'll know about keeping your contact info up to date right?? <G>)

I hate doing that to a member. But, it was needed.

One other thing I need to mention. I have NOT deleted the account the problem files are being hosted on. I don't do that. If your account outgrows the resources we have, I WILL work with you to try and find a solution. Even if it means finding you another host. Hey I understand about your webspace. It's your web home! It's important. So that's why we'll never kill an account without reason.

But of course with all things there is always an exception. Our exception is illegal files (and by illegal files I'm talking about something that is a violation of the law). Here is the Terms of Service for Domania:

http://d21c.com/tos.shtml

It's simple and straight to the point. I don't believe in a TOS that is 55 pages long and basically says nothing. And neither did Craig. Violating the Domania TOS will get your account suspended, and if the reason is illegal activity, your account will be deleted. And without warning. I know that's going to raise some eyebrows. Sorry. But, by signing up for a Domania account you did promise to adhere to the TOS.
