Server Moves
« on: March 21, 2008, 04:53:04 PM »

There's been a slight change of plan. Instead of putting ya'll onto one server, we are going to have two. Domania will be on it's own server as it uses the most resources. We will move Jasper", "Mabel", "Boojum", and "Ides", onto our first server, then later we will move "Craig" onto it's own new server.

The first server moves will start sometime early next week. We'll try to schedule them in the wee hours to limit any effect. There should be no downtime with these moves. We've done several of these moves in the past and they are really quite painless for the users. The only adverse effect can be some DNS issues with folks who's ISP's are slow to update their DNS cache. But that is something that is of course out of our hands.

The new server will be named "Capricorn". The new Domania server will of course be named "Craig".

Are ya gettin excited yet???

wOOt!

Geek stuff. For all of ya'll that could care less about this stuff, skip this post.

Capricorn
Cpu: dual quad core Intel Cpu's. A total of 8 cores.
Ram: 12 gigs of ram
Hard Drives: 4 hard drives in a raid 10 array. The hard drives are fully hot swapable. If a drive fails, the techs pull it and replace it. No downtime.
Datacenter: Downtown Chicago. Previously we were going with a company that had their datacenter in Lansing Michigan. We scrapped that plan. The Chicago Datacenter will provide us with connectivity through Level (3), RCN, and Global Crossing. The datacenter is fully security enabled. Everyone must have keycards for entrance, and the entire datacenter has full video monitoring. And in addition to all of that, they have full fire suppresion systems, and two enterprise class generators to run the datacenter in case of a power outage.

At this point it looks like the server moves for boojum, ides, mabel, and jasper will happen Wednesday night. We could split it up to two nights depending on how it goes on the first night. More info asap!

Ok, we are going to start moving at 9:00 PM Central time on Wednesday the 26th of March. We are lowering the DNS refresh time so that it will all update quick. But, that being said, it's advisable that you DO NOT update any pages during the move. Because of the way DNS propagation happens your update could get lost. Post this around the Webtv ng's folks. If the Webtv ng is somewhere you go and you know of others that are using our service, post about the move. Let's get everyone informed.

Thanks,

Bert

P.S.
Just as an aid:
9:00 PM central translates to:

10:00 PM Eastern
8:00 PM Mountain
7:00 PM Pacific

Just to make things a little more clear. For you folks who don't know what server you are on. domania.us and d21c.com will NOT be affected by this move. We will be moving both d21c.com and domania.us aka the "craig" server to a different server at a later date.

Thanks for the Update.

No problem. As we start the move tonight, I'll be posting status reports in this thread. My apologies to the folks on the left coast as this will still be during prime time when we start this. But, when something like this effects folks nationwide or worse (we have a couple of users in Europe) you have to pick a time that would impact the fewest amount of people.

Bert,

Please pardon my ignorance!

There is a post in the "offworld-" alt.discuss newsgroup, with the subject "Amish & PDHomes server info", which quotes your Reply #3 above. However, I don't see any reference in this thread to "Amish" or PDHomes". Does this server move affect PDHomes accounts?

Thanks.

Edited for spelling.

Yes it does. Domania is not included in this move. Everything else is. I have now placed a link to this thread in the respective Amish and PDhomes forums here. Thanks for the suggestion. Don't know why I didn't think of it.

What will happen to our PDHomes and Amish Logins once the two are moved to a new server? Right now I have both on FKeys. Will they be null and void after the move?

Nope. Nothing will change after the move.

We are currently working on boojum. Trying to optimize it before the move. The main hard drive had a lot of old stuff on it and we are transferring all of that over to the backup drive in case we need it later. More info as this progresses. But yes, we have started.

Just an update. The transfers are progressing nicely albeit slowly due to the slowness of the old servers. This is going to take a while and there most likely won't be any new info until morning. I'll keep ya'll abreast of the situation as it progresses.

Still working on the transfer for boojum. If you have work to do in your accounts go ahead. We are going to sync the data between the two servers so any changes you make will  be reflected on both servers.

The consensus is that the transfer from boojum should wrap up tonight. So we'll probably not do another transfer tonight. I'll post if we do.

Well it just keeps getting better and better. Apparently during the wee hours the transfer timed out as boojum became overloaded (which all of those servers are wont to do at the drop of a feather). The transfer restarted when boojum came back up like it's supposed to do. But there's always a but. Seems because of the restart the transfer became corrupted. So, back to square one. No worries for you folks, the data is still safe on boojum. We'll start again here shortly but with a slighty different angle. Have no fear, we will get this done. And while doing this we'll learn the best and fastest way to get it done on the other servers also.

The move for boojum is progressing nicely. We think we have figured out a way to get this done. It will probably take all night, same as yesterday, I'll post the results in the morning. I'm going to go and get some much needed sleep. The rest of the move will be monitored overnight and I will be automatically contacted if it fails again.

Well on the plus side the transfer is going good. The accounts are showing up just fine. The bad news is that it's slow. Real slow. Could be another 10 to 12 hours before completion. Also the transfer has timed out several times. However, it's resuming as it should be without giving up. Frankly I am not used to servers that are this slow and with such poor connections. Neither are our sysadmins. "Holy crap!" has been uttered several times by all of us LOL! We will get this done.

Yay! The boojum transfer is finally done. However, we are going to hold off until Sunday afternoon until we start making the dns switch over to the new server. We just want to verify that all accounts and everything associated with them have been moved. Remember we 4 other servers to do and we want to make sure it's done right.  Then I'll make the dns changes which will actually bring the boojum users over to capricorn. In the mean time, don't worry. Both servers are synced. Everything you do on boojum will be mirrored over to capricorn.

Who is next Jasper, Mabel or Ides?

Oh and just to give you a warning, Jasper was a lot slower than Boojam was for me. If it wasn't for the PHP5. I would have been asked to move back

Hi Mike,
The next one will be Mabel. On Capricorn Php5 will run as default. You can switch a directory over to Php4 by using this in your .htaccesss:

Code:
AddHandler x-httpd-php4 .php
