What 'ya got there??
|
And we've made another change in plans. What we are doing now is starting the transfer on the other three servers (mabel, ides, and jasper). Those should be completed by tomorrow night. Then we let the sync program do it's thing on all 4 (boojum, mabel, ides, and jasper), and then we will make the final DNS switch sometime on Tuesday. We'll keep the old servers up for a couple of days after the final DNS switch just in case some folks ISP's are slow to update their DNS cache and any updated files come up missing on the new server. So by Thursday, everyone should be happily humming along on Capricorn!

Bert
P.S. Keep in mind this is a very large move. And we've never attempted a move this large before. That's why the plan keeps changing. On the plus side though, once we get to Craig the move should be a snap!

Things are going along nicely. We are in the process of deleting the package files that came from the old servers which will free up a lot of disk space. We'll the final sync late tonight, and switch the name servers. Folks that had their domains handled through Paul or me will need do nothing as I will change the name servers for you. For you few folks who do have domains with other registrars I will be contacting you this evening with info on changing your name servers. So if all goes well, when you get up in the morning you should be cruisin on Capricorn!

I have switched the nameserver on domania.org. Just as a test to get an idea of how long the dns will take to switch. I've created a test file on Capricorn to show to me when I am actually looking at Capricorn (the file doesn't exist on boojum). Here's the file:
http://www.domania.org/dnstest.txt
If you get a 404 error don't worry. Just means the dns hasn't switched over for you yet. I just switched the dns for it a couple of minutes ago. But it should be up for me shortly.

Ok I'm to do a couple more tests just to make sure the dns is working properly. If that works then I'll start switching nameservers for the rest of the accounts.

<<A good thing to do is create a file like I did below. After the switch happens, if you see that file you are on the old server. If you get a 404 error, welcome to Capricorn!>> File like what? Wouldn't our pages at PD Homes have a zbox addy when everything is switched? Sorry to be so dense

Ok. All of my tests are now working perfectly. I will start changing the nameservers tonight at 10:00 PM Pacific time.

Hi Mike, Yah it can be a little unnerving when the DNS starts to change over. I can get to that page just fine. Just hang in there.

I had forgiten a little trick Paul had. He made a subdomain pointing to the new server and another to the old
old.eclecticdjs.com new.eclecticdjs.com
So one or the other was available during the move. Came in handy when Jasper was down which was way to often. I could do my thing on Boojam and move it to Jasper. Speaking of that ... Paul said there was one account that was sending so much email at a time that it was briging Jasper down but with his system, he couldn't tell which one. When you get our email working again, you might have a spamming proxy somewhere.
My friend's PDHomes index page shows this now:
Index of / cgi-bin/ Apache/2.2.8 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.8 OpenSSL/0.9.8b mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 PHP/5.2.5 Server at dancingfromtheheart.org Port 80
She (heartdance) signed up here but I see she hasn't posted yet. Did she call you?

Well something is happening. All the images I deleted yesterday and day before are back and the images I worked on today for my ng are gone.. Guess they are out in cyber space. Hopefully they will find their way back home. Gonna stay clear of FM till the smoke clears

If you're on a computer, I would advise you to use OpenDNS instead of your ISP's nameservers.
http://openDNS.com
It's free, and it's anonymous. You don't have to "sign up" or anything like that at the OpenDNS site - you just make a couple of changes in your computer (or in your router), telling it to use the IPs for openDNS's nameservers.
Many ISPs are caching DNS information much longer than they're supposed to; it reduces the load on their hosts and reduces their bandwidth usage, but it sends you to the wrong address for a long time after it's changed. OpenDNS will send you to the correct IP.
As a side note, people using Comcast for their broadband are having a lot of problems right now. They had their system set up to keep users from using BitTorrent, but the government told them to stop, so they switched to some other software, and now their system is really screwed up, disrupting normal browsing and email usage. People have been complaining for 4-5 days, and at this point Comcast keeps them waiting on hold for an hour or more at a time....
You can read more about it at http://systems.cs.colorado.edu/mediawiki/index.php/Broadband_Network_Management
