And we've made another change in plans. What we are doing now is starting the transfer on the other three servers (mabel, ides, and jasper). Those should be completed by tomorrow night. Then we let the sync program do it's thing on all 4 (boojum, mabel, ides, and jasper), and then we will make the final DNS switch sometime on Tuesday. We'll keep the old servers up for a couple of days after the final DNS switch just in case some folks ISP's are slow to update their DNS cache and any updated files come up missing on the new server. So by Thursday, everyone should be happily humming along on Capricorn!

wOOt!

Bert

P.S.
Keep in mind this is a very large move. And we've never attempted a move this large before. That's why the plan keeps changing. On the plus side though, once we get to Craig the move should be a snap!

Things are going along nicely. We are in the process of deleting the package files that came from the old servers which will free up a lot of disk space. We'll the final sync late tonight, and switch the name servers. Folks that had their domains handled through Paul or me will need do nothing as I will change the name servers for you. For you few folks who do have domains with other registrars I will be contacting you this evening with info on changing your name servers. So if all goes well, when you get up in the morning you should be cruisin on Capricorn!

And of course as soon as I said that, there's a snag. Whilst optimizing the hard drive we've found some "bad things". We've found a couple of old sites that have been defaced. So, we are going to bring out the big guns and make sure those defacements have not put any exploits on the server. I highly doubt it frankly, as it's just the usual script kiddy defacements. But better safe than sorry. So on the plus side, when we do start changing the nameservers Capricorn will be much more secure than the one you were previously on.

Currently we are in the process of auditing all of the DAP servers for security. Then around 10:00 PM tonight Capricorn is going to get a Kernel upgrade. After the Kernel upgrade we'll do the final sync, then audit everything on Capricorn (in case something comes over from the DAP servers that we've missed) then we'll start changing the nameservers over. I'll let you know when we are getting close to doing that. I know this is taking forever. But we want to do it right, and this is a VERY large move. All my prior moves have been 1 to 1 moves. And never from servers that I didn't control from the beginning. So it's a learning experience. But by doing this, the Domania move will go much faster.

Well last nights sync failed. Not sure why. Possibly due to the kernel upgrade. We'll get that worked out today and then try the sync again. If the sync succeeds tonight, then I'll start switching nameservers tomorrow morning.

The sync did succeed. However I've noticed we need to do some more house cleaning. So we are in the process of getting that done. Then we'll sync again. After that final sync we'll start changing nameservers.

I have switched the nameserver on domania.org. Just as a test to get an idea of how long the dns will take to switch. I've created a test file on Capricorn to show to me when I am actually looking at Capricorn (the file doesn't exist on boojum). Here's the file:

http://www.domania.org/dnstest.txt

If you get a 404 error don't worry. Just means the dns hasn't switched over for you yet. I just switched the dns for it a couple of minutes ago. But it should be up for me shortly.

Ok I'm to do a couple more tests just to make sure the dns is working properly. If that works then I'll start switching nameservers for the rest of the accounts.

Well it could be that it's taking the DNS a lot longer to propagate. I'll leave it go until tomorrow and then see what is up.

Ok both files are working well for me now. I'm going to start changing DNS for everyone in the morning. A good thing to do is create a file like I did below. After the switch happens, if you see that file you are on the old server. If you get a 404 error, welcome to Capricorn!

File like what?
Wouldn't our pages at PD Homes have a zbox addy when everything is switched?

Hi Texun,
Just create a text file with whatever you want in it. Put it where ever you want in your account, but in an easy place for you to find. When the switch happens, you'll get a 404 error as that page won't exist on the new server. Yes that means that whatever changes you make to your pages on the old server won't cross over. But that's ok as after the domains have propagated over to the new server we'll do another sync and those pages you've updated will go to the new server.

No you won't see any url changes with this move. Everything will remain the same. You'll just notice the IP's will be different whenever you do a whois check.

Since Capricorn does tidy functions and Jasper does not, I made a page that will only work on Capricorn that will tell me when it can't do tidy.

The only page I can reach is the main one:
http://eclecticdjs.com

Can't get to any other one like
http://eclecticdjs.com/mike/wtv/althome.php

A check of my whois shows that my nameserver is now domania.

Hi Mike,
Yah it can be a little unnerving when the DNS starts to change over. I can get to that page just fine. Just hang in there.

I had forgiten a little trick Paul had. He made a subdomain pointing to the new server and another to the old

old.eclecticdjs.com
new.eclecticdjs.com

So one or the other was available during the move. Came in handy when Jasper was down which was way to often. I could do my thing on Boojam and move it to Jasper. Speaking of that ... Paul said there was one account that was sending so much email at a time that it was briging Jasper down but with his system, he couldn't tell which one. When you get our email working again, you might have a spamming proxy somewhere.

My friend's PDHomes index page shows this now:

Index of /
cgi-bin/
Apache/2.2.8 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.8 OpenSSL/0.9.8b mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 PHP/5.2.5 Server at dancingfromtheheart.org Port 80

She (heartdance) signed up here but I see she hasn't posted yet. Did she call you?

Hi Mike,
I'll have to check into that account. It's possible the files didn't make the transfer. I have been in touch with her through email.

The new server has much better monitoring options. So if there is spam going out we will catch it.

Mike,
Just an FYI her account is fine. It's just that pdhomes.net hasn't resolved yet so her redirect isn't working. Frankly I'm not sure why Paul set some redirects up the way he did (empty domain account) but once pdhomes.net resolves I'll fix it.

If you're on a computer, I would advise you to use OpenDNS instead of your ISP's nameservers.

http://openDNS.com

It's free, and it's anonymous. You don't have to "sign up" or anything like that at the OpenDNS site - you just make a couple of changes in your computer (or in your router), telling it to use the IPs for openDNS's nameservers.

Many ISPs are caching DNS information much longer than they're supposed to; it reduces the load on their hosts and reduces their bandwidth usage, but it sends you to the wrong address for a long time after it's changed. OpenDNS will send you to the correct IP.

As a side note, people using Comcast for their broadband are having a lot of problems right now. They had their system set up to keep users from using BitTorrent, but the government told them to stop, so they switched to some other software, and now their system is really screwed up, disrupting normal browsing and email usage. People have been complaining for 4-5 days, and at this point Comcast keeps them waiting on hold for an hour or more at a time....

You can read more about it at http://systems.cs.colorado.edu/mediawiki/index.php/Broadband_Network_Management
