What 'ya got there??

I remember way back in the day when I was a regular Webtv user, that those "to clear you cache just click here" links really didn't do the job. From what I remember the only way to really clear your cache was to power off and unplug for a few. There was even a demonstration on how the links really didn't work. I think that they only clear your recents but I could be wrong. If anyone remembers what I'm talking about and remembers the demonstration could you post it here? I'm finding that newer members to Webtv are thinking those clear cache links work. But they don't.

The demonstration page was mine. Geocities deleted my acount and that is one thing I didn't have backed up. and never recreated. I originaly used Gifworks to make the images and it was very tedious. Now days I could use PHP to crank out some images and add a built in timer. All it was was a slide show. You would time the first run, make a note of it then time a second run. If the second run was faster, that proved that the images were cached. Sometimes a third or forth run was required to get it to load faster. If the so called cache clearers really worked, then a run after using one would be as slow as the first run because webtv would have to get fresh images from the net again instead of from the cache. Every time the test was tried, the run after the "cache clearer" was used, the time was closer to the time of the run with the images cached then when they were not. I made a variation of that after Paul Ding said something about caching that gave me the idea. He suggested that a lot of small files might bump larger ones from the cache. That was broken when I moved from Boojam to Jasper but it should be easy to fix.... Here you go, better than the original: Random Slide Show http://eclecticdjs.com/mike/temp/ball/cache.html It only works if you user it before your cache is totally locked up. The reason I hadn't fixed it earlier is because I use this instead now: Random Laser Slide Show http://eclecticdjs.com/mike/wtv/tools/spirograph/laser_04.phpMore variety. I have some variations of that that create 3D spirographs but they take a lot of server time to render and the file size of the result is too big. They look REALLY cool though! Thanks for that Mike. I don't think it was your page I remember, but it pretty much proved the same thing. If you need to clear your cache there is only one way to do it. Power off and unplug. I don't know is something is going on with Webtv lately, but frankly it seems like it. I've been getting lots of complaints lately saying "I can't log in to the forum, or, whenever I try to login into my account the login popup keeps popping up." Seems that powering off and unpluging your box fixes those types of issues.

I miss a lot of the people I met while using the LBB, but I do not miss the WebTV surfing experience. Ouch!
