Ringtones for your phone
« on: April 28, 2008, 11:35:07 AM »

Anyone into these?... I just found this out recently when trying to add some to my phone but maybe this is common knowledge and I am just showing my naivete.

They sell those to people for $1.99 or $2.99 ea. when you can easily email them to yourself.

(The cost will depend on the service or service plan you have... but the plan I have does NOT include text messaging, email or Internet Service...  most companies allow use of these on a pay per use basis which is far cheaper than buying them a couple bucks a whack)

*You may also need to call your phone service at an 800# to get some settings configured.

Plus what you email to yourself can be infinitely personalized via editing altho I can't edit midis I can edit wavs and mp3s.

You can also send yourself graphics to use as a background.

I guess I will make a page explaining all this.

If anyone wants some editing done I can do it in my spare time but I will publish all the ones I am playing with for people to choose from.

address is www.bugland.us/ringtones/

One little thing I might ask is for folks to send me or post the info they get from their phone service so I can list it for people on a page.
(I looked up some info on the net and it wasn't current)

I can list the 800 numbers to set your phone up.. and the service address used for messaging.
E.g. my phone service is Cingular aka ATT...

Free # for setup (if needed)
...call 800-331-0500 (press "0" twice to get a representative.)

The addresses they use for messaging are (currently)

YourCellPhoneAreaCode&Number@txt.att.net for text messges
and
YourCellPhoneAreaCode&Number@mms.att.net for multimedia messages.

Without an Internet Service Plan text messages are $.20 for the first 160bytes
and $.01 for each Kbyte thereafter...
and $.30 per multimedia message regardless of number of attachments.
Hence it is prudent to send several attachments in each message.
(I do 5 at a time now)

Iv'e started the page now.
Feedback here or by mail appreciated.

Those instructions look pretty good although I rarely download ringtones. I found I was ignoring those little songs. Some of them are MIDIs I have on my pages. I was even ignoring the modern phone chirp. I have my phone set to ring like those old-fashioned "brrrrng-brrrrng!" phones. That I answer.  laugh

I do like to download wallpaper. I have a picture my brother sent me that I can't get to be wallpaper. He'd sent it from his cell to mine. He's Verizon and I'm AT&T (formerly Cingular) but I don't see how that could be a problem.

I had a similar problem sending myself some graphics. (my phone said the graphics were "too big" to open.) Hard to believe it's the kbytes since they were small but maybe it meant the resolution.

Me and my phone don't communicate well!

Just now looking in my phone again... all the pics it takes are 640 x 480.
I'll try a few of those later and repost the results.

I suppose it's possible the one he sent you was the wrong size for your phone.

What kind of phone do you have?... and can you check the images you have stored and see what resolution they are?

Well thaks for motivating me to figure this out for MY phone... I aint sure it helps YOU tho :)

apparently  (for my Razr3) the images DO have to be 640x480

I had a little problem setting it as my wallpaper but got it done.
Resizing isn't hard but in doing that you have to crop the picture correctly to keep from distorting the image.

Let me know if you need something resized.

Hi Nelly,
If you have a Gmail account and the image is an attachment, there will be a link to download the image. If you don't have Gmail let me know which Email client you use.

I uploaded it to my PDhomes account:ttp://pdhomes.net/music/isleofjersey/family/tom_all_wet.jpg It's in Flickr and Photobucket, too, as well as my computer and phone. I'm a belt and suspenders (lotsa belts and suspenders) kinda person.  laugh

Thank you for the offer, though. Yes, I do have a Gmail account (doesn't everybody?  wink )
