Domania is down again. Enough is enough!
« on: May 07, 2008, 10:43:35 PM »

The server is being rebooted and should be back on line shortly. The uptime for Domania is just not acceptable to me. I will be moving Domania ASAP. Unfortunately this will have to be quick and dirty. So, yes there will probably be more downtime involved. However with the dns changes we made yesterday it will be far less painful. The big question will be to see how much moving the accounts from craig will overload the server. We had the same problem moving Amish and PDhomes. I will post more about this move as soon as possible tomorrow. Once I get this set up we will be moving over to our Capricorn server where Amish and PDhomes already are. That server is already set up for Webtv users. We will probably upgrade to a new server that is more powerful to handle the extra load. That won't be an issue as the upgrade will be with Capricorn's current provider and on their network. All of our IP's will remain the same, the server settings/dns will remain the same and there won't be any downtime involved with the upgrade. I apologize to all Domaniacs for all of this hassle. But then the end of it is near. More info on this asap.

Well Bert, this might be a dumb question but I need to know. Does this mean after the move that I can still have files at d21c.com and AH and one will be a back up for the other one? I used to do this at d21.com and domania.us and Craig put them on the same server; at least I think that's what he did, so I went to PDHomes and then to AH for a backup.

Oh yea, hope I quoted that right,

Hi Mike,
Yes you will be able to have accounts on any of the different companies. Although they will all be on the same server. I know that's a risk. And I never like keeping all of my eggs in one basket. However we need to get Domania out of it's current datacenter asap and this is the fastest way to go. And the safest. In addition to the regular daily, weekly, and monthly backups, there will a be a separate weekly backup to a server in a different datacenter in a different part of the country. Just in case Chicago goes poof. Which of course I hope never happens as I really like Chicago.

Didn't quote, couldn't get it to work right, but someday.

So after the move, if d21c.com goes, Amish Hosting goes also? After all is settled do you plan to keep them on the same server? If so I need to move one of my accounts.

Sorry to bother you with this, I know you must be worn out from all this,

mike

Hi Mike,
No, I don't plan on keeping them all together. But that being said, moving servers is disruptive. Not to everyone, but there are always a few who experience issues because of it. Case in point is the recent server move thread for Amish and PDhomes. On the plus side we already have Capricorn tweaked for Webtv users. And the move to the new box no one will even notice. But the down side is that you never know what moving a client base into a new server from an old one will entail. But we'll get it worked out. The Amish/PDhomes move involved 4 servers moving into one. Domania is only one server. With the upgrade to the new box, Capricorn will basically be cloned over to it. So all of the issues we had during the Amish/PDhomes moves will be already ironed out for Domania.
