yellow lines w/ file folder
« on: July 04, 2008, 05:44:59 PM »

When I upload some files from my hard drive, a yellow line appears on in the pertinent directory with a file folder next to it. I don't know why it does this but I cut my losses and try to delete it, but can't -- I receive an error message that the file is not empty. Any ideas? Thanks and happy 4th.  JoAnn ohmy

Hi JoAnn,
Yup the problem is there are illegal characters in the filenames you are uploading from your PC. Most likely spaces. Email me where the offending files are and I will fix them for you. In the future do NOT try to delete those. Kind of like what happened in Ghosbusters when they "crossed the streams".

:woot:THANK YOU !!!! They make me crazy - and your answer doesn't surprise me !!! Most of them are in my ttf files but others are in my GIF/plants file, too. Does that mean THEIR link is bad -  meaning does the link that I snag itself won't work? Or is the problem in the id they give the link? Make sense? I really appreciate your help, Bert. I am trying so hard to learn and the only way I know is to ask questions. You are a brilliant dude to know all the answers !!  JoAnn

If whichever service you are using comes with C-Panel, you can delete those pesky bad files yourself from there. You have to go the source, the File Manager can't handle it... as I discovered many years ago.  blink

If you have a file on your hard drive and the path looks iffy to you, it probably is. Best thing - change the file name to something you know is kosher before attempting an upload.

:mellow:Got you big guy - the images and files I use are mainly from e-mails (I don't use any other service) -- but now I remember on webtv that often I couldn't upload because of the file name, although, for the most part webtv was a lot easier to work with as the image or file went right to zbox. Oh well. That's it for tonight. Have a good one - it's still early for you - Oregon, I believe? Take care and hello to Rox.  JoAnn

Yup in Oregon. Still not even dark here yet.
The problem is just with the filenames. For instance there were three like this:

Flowers_Clipart (4).jpg

The parentheses and the space after clipart are a no no. Windows doesn't care about spaces etc in filenames but the Web does.

I have fixed those for you. If you find any others just let me know.

By service I was of course referring to the host you're on. I know Amish and ZboX use C-Panel, but I don't know about Domania, if that's the one you're on. If you have C-Panel, you can go in and delete those wonky files yourself when they occur... it just can't be done from your file manager. As for email files, you may find yourself ahead of the game by downloading them from mail onto your pc first. That way you can control their names when you upload them to your website, and change those wonky attachment strings into something more reasonable.
