SHO files not working
« on: August 03, 2008, 09:20:31 PM »

I noticed this last night while going through my pages. All my slide shows are in SHO format and I use frames to allow music to play through. I also have a second set "plain" (no frames) for those browsers that don't handle such.
Now the SHO files aren't viewable at all. Nothing but a blank screen. Is it webtv thing? I have yet to view these shows on my PC.

Hi Sugar,
Well that's interesting. Frankly I've never heard of that file extension before. Seems that .sho files are an extension for a screensaver but it does have a mime type available for viewing on the web. The mime type seems to be "application/x-showcase". I will need to do a bit more research on this to make sure it's a viable mime type for Cap. Frankly we don't run it on Mig and Aries either. I'll let you know what I come up with.

Paul Ding installed the SHO files format on Domania. It was popular at first and fun to fool around with. I don't know how many people used it but there was a contest.

SHO files
pages can be found on Google.

I don't know anything about them other then I got them to work.

I can see the urls on Sugar Crisps pages and hear music, but that's it.

Just now viewed these on the PC. Nothing but the midi and a list of slide URL's. Even got an error popup from IE.
If the SHO files aren't working, then what about the rfi and box files (which I don't use anymore)? All those were installed by Paul a couple years ago.

Ok the Mime type for the .sho files has been added for Domania/PDhomes. Let me know if it works. For folks that have their own Cpanel based accounts you will need to go into Cpanel, in the "Site Management" area click on "Mime Types". At the top put in "application/x-showcase" (without the quotes) in the "Mime Type" text box, then type in ".sho" (also without quotes) in the "Extention(s)" text box. Then click the "Add" button.

Unfortunately we will no longer be running the rfi files. That requires a modification to Apache's httpd.conf file (the main config file for Apache) which used to not be a big deal. However now days whenever Cpanel updates (which it does on a regular basis) the httpd.conf file gets overwritten. So I would have to add the rfi file entry again everytime Cpanel updates. However you can get around that by writing what called an include file for the httpd.conf file. However there is no information anywhere that I can find on how to write that include file for rfi files. So it's kind of a catch22.

Ok, now what are "box" files? LOL!

 wink

That was another file type Paul installed. You just made a list of URL's and named the file "something.box". Then use it for a custom jumpbox menu. I don't use these anymore, opting for the remote cgi or javascript j-boxes. At least I can get to a link with those! laugh

I'll check my slide shows then report back. Thanks Bert! smile

Sad The slide shows are still not working. Nothing but blank pages & midis playing. Even the ones w/o frames aren't working.

Well I tried tweaking the mime type but no joy. I'm kind of starting to think I'm barking up the wrong tree. As everything I can find on that mime type requires a Silicon Graphics operating system which of course we don't use. So, I'm starting to think that this is one of those special things like rfi and box files that Paul did.

Bert just to let you know, the sho script quit working at Amish long before you took Amish over so I'm slightly surprise that it was still working at Domania.

If it helps any, here's a text file I made with notes from Paul about the sho.tpl script which is the slideshow script and about the .sho script which only contains the urls of the pictures in the slideshow. The references to flood.sho is just the name I gave to a test slideshow that I made-

The SHO, RFI and BOX file types used Apache "handlers".

What you could do, Bert, is to write a file called "custom.conf" or something like that, and then put an include directive in the httpd.conf file to include the custom.conf file like this:

Include "/usr/local/apache/conf/includes/custom.conf"

The custom.conf file would need two directives for each file type, sorta like this:

AddType slideshow .sho
Action slideshow /cgi-sys/slideshow.cgi?
AddType ran-page .rfi
Action ran-page /cgi-sys/ransig.pl
AddType jumpbox .box
Action jumpbox /cgi-sys/jumpbox.pl?

Then you would plop the slideshow.cgi, ransig.pl and jumpbox.pl programs in the /cgi-sys/ directory.

That directory name is an alias. Cpanel automatically adds this line to httpd.conf
ScriptAlias /cgi-sys/ /usr/local/cpanel/cgi-sys/

Thanks for that Paul. You wouldn't happen to have copies of the slideshow.cgi, ransig.pl and jumpbox.pl  scripts would you? I thought I had a backup of the ransig.pl script, but apparently not.

I've just emailed you a bunch of handler files - not just those but also others I had been playing around with and never "released".   If you haven't already received them, let me know.

Any progress on the slide show script? I'm trying alternative methods for these shows but it's just not working.  Sad
No big rush but people have been asking me when the slide shows will run again. Thanks Bert.

No progress at all to date Sugar unfortunately. The big problem is time. Not enough hours in the day etc. I think once I get billing totally straightened out, I will have time to work on this. But it's going to take at least another month.

Hello sugarcrisp, I didn't try the slideshows at domania, nor have I ever made one but thought I'd offer this page that Jane (Lady Timeless) made:

http://d21c.com/temp/pages4/ccpslideshow.html

It might help until the SHO files are back, only thing is you'd have to make the shows twice. Good luck, hope this helps,

Good I'm glad you may be able to use it. I'm thrilled I helped someone. I don't understand scripts and such, I think I've reached my limit, so my thanks go to you!
