Our Miss Elvira is missing
« on: August 07, 2008, 10:51:09 PM »

Yah it's been over 50 hours now and there is no sign of Ellie. That is the bad thing with outdoor cats in that some times they just vanish, never to be seen again, and you will forever wonder what the hell happened. She was five and a half years old. Ellie was our little oddball. She was always a very small cat weighing maybe 12 pounds max at the age of 5 and a half. I say that she was our oddball as she was always painfully shy. But when the mood struck her she would demand attention. And she would never meow. She always made little humming noises. Her sleek black coat always felt like black silk. Never seen a cat with a coat as sleek as hers. Which is why we had so many problems with getting a good picture of her. She'd always blend in with the shadows so in most pic's she was just a little black shadow. We did finally manage to get a couple of good pics of her:

And this one, where you can see the only white on her body:

She was our "Stealth Cat" as she'd sneak in when we'd open the door and because she'd blend in with the shadows we wouldn't see her come in. So we'd go about our business, turn a corner and she'd just be there. Ahhhhhh! LOL! Last time she did that to me was about a month ago. I went into the bathroom to do my thing, and we have a window on the wall next to the toilet. I didn't even see her as I came in. I was standing up starting my "bidness", all of sudden there was movement in the corner of my eye. I turned to look and there was Ellie looking at me with those huge green eyes from the sill of the bathroom window! Ahhhhhhhh! Yah, she got me good LOL!
I think she liked doing that to us LOL!

Couple of years ago, me and Rox were sitting on our back deck just enjoying the summer. Ellie was out there in the back yard just kicking back. Suddenly a bird landed in the yard no more than 15 feet from her. She very slowly got up and started heading towards the bird. Rox was the voice of reason and said "hon she's going to go after that bird." I said "I know hun, but lets just see what she does." It was amazing! The bird would only key on movement, so she very slowly got up, and started going for the bird. The bird would look away and she'd move forward. The bird would turn it's head her way and she'd become a little black stone. It was amazing to watch. The stealth she had. (hence "stealthcat"). She did get the bird, but I immediately intervened and saved the bird. But it was amazing to watch. And I think that bird was granted a very valuable lesson.

I'm hoping that I'm doing this prematurely. That she'll all of a sudden show up and all will be fine. But, she would never ever let a stranger get close to her. Never ever! So, it could have been some type of predator. We do have cougars here and as stealthy as she was, a cougar might have met her match. But most likely, she got into a scrape with another cat, got a scratch or bite, and then got a very bad fever possibly associated with an abscess. That happened before with her. She vanished for a couple of days then showed up with a big hole in her chest from an abscess that blew out. Abcesses can cause a very high fever which can kill a cat. Some cats when they get sick go and hide, others try to get home. We really wish she would have tried to get home. We keep a supply of antibiotics so if it was a fever thing, we probably could have saved her.

Once again this is more for me than anything else. I fear the worst and I'm rambling. Ellie was family and I'm getting seriously tired of losing family.

Hi kids... I was hoping for some good news by now.  I've been thinking about you and your missing kitty.  How are you guys doing?   Still hoping for a miracle here.   My heart is with you.  I know how it is to search and wait for a lost kitty.  It sucks!

Thanks Suz and D. Unfortunately there is no good news to report. Still no sign of her. It's been a week now, and as each day goes by, it seems our worst fears are being realized.

Thanks for all  the support. She is still missing, and as Bert said, we are loosing hope of her showing up, now.

We are now down to 3 kitties. There is a void where Miss Elvira, used to be... Sad  Bert mentioned getting another kitty...No, not again. I'm staying with what we have now.

I'm hoping someday to find a Bassett puppy, for the rest of the furballs to initiate...;-)
