Hot Link Protection feature
« on: February 28, 2005, 04:28:16 PM »

I've had a number of MSN groups and some misc sites hotlinking to me for a while now and have learned to live with it as I don't imagine it's using up all that much bandwidth. However, I found an Angelfire site today that is hotlinking to seven of my images, for page backs and page images. Seven! Now how rude is that??  So I want to try this Hotlink protection, but would like to know more about how it works.

Redirect HotLink attempts to: - What can I put there? An html page or an image? I have an image I've used before to switch out with hotlinked images, but don't understand how this works. If I activate Hotlink protection and redirect to this "don't-link" image, what shows on that site's page? I mean, if they can't Hotlink anymore, how will they see the don't-link image I want them to see?
If I redirect to an html page, then what happens? If they're using one of my images as a page back or displayed graphic, what happens when i redirect to a html page? Do they just get the red-x on that part of the page where the image should be?

More input on how this Hotlink Protection works would be great,

Thanks,

Col

Hi Col,
If you put a specific image in the text box. That image will be displayed on the persons page that is linking to you. However I believe if you specify a page, they will just get the broken image icon. The .htaccess file that the hotlink protection feature creates will allow them to see only the image you specify. After you enable hotlink protection and add your image you can see the codes in the .htaccess file in your root directory. Just be sure to put the url's of the sites you WANT to be able to hotlink to your files in the form box provided.
